A Pickering road salt shortage is prompting changes to winter maintenance operations as municipalities across Durham Region face limited supplies.
City officials say residents may notice salt being mixed with sand or other de-icing materials on sidewalks and roadways. The blended approach is being used to improve traction while conserving remaining salt reserves.
As part of the adjustments, salt may be applied later during winter storms when weather conditions allow it to be most effective. Snow plowing operations will continue once approximately five centimetres of snow has accumulated, followed by standard post-storm cleanup.
Officials emphasized that these measures reflect winter maintenance practices being implemented across Ontario in response to the province-wide shortage. Winter operations will continue to be modified as needed based on weather conditions, road safety requirements, and material availability.
Residents are encouraged to exercise caution while travelling, as road and sidewalk conditions may differ from previous winters due to the reduced use of salt.
