A Whitby lottery win has come at the perfect time for a local man who was just weeks away from retirement.
Geoffrey McCaul, 65, of Whitby, won $333,333.40 in the December 30, 2025 Lotto Max draw after splitting a $1-million MaxMillions prize with two other winners, according to the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation (OLG).
McCaul has been playing OLG lottery games for about 30 years and regularly enjoys Lotto Max and Lottario.
“I’ve won smaller prizes over the years, but nothing this major,” he said.
After driving his wife to work one morning, McCaul checked his ticket and discovered the unexpected win.
“I couldn’t believe it,” he said. “I’m retiring next month, so this win came at a good time. It feels surreal.”
He immediately called his wife to share the news.
“She kept saying, ‘No way,’” McCaul recalled. “When we told the kids, they were so excited and happy.”
While McCaul said he hasn’t yet decided how he’ll spend the money, one plan is already taking shape.
“One thing’s for sure — I plan to upgrade our seats when we fly to Australia to visit family,” he said.
The winning ticket for the Whitby lottery win was purchased at the Shell station on Harwood Avenue North in Ajax, OLG confirmed.
