Ajax and Pickering Warming Centres Open During Extreme Cold

Ajax Pickering warming centres are providing critical relief as extreme cold weather continues across Durham Region. Residents without shelter now have access to safe, heated spaces both during the day and overnight.

In Pickering, the Chestnut Hill Developments Recreation Complex is operating as a designated warming centre whenever a cold weather warning is in effect. The facility remains open during regular operating hours through Tuesday, Jan. 27. All Pickering libraries and recreation centres are also available to the public.

An emergency overnight warming centre is operating at Peace Lutheran Church in Pickering from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. nightly until March 31. The location is pet-friendly and open to adults aged 18 and older.

In Ajax, the town has opened an emergency overnight warming space at Ajax Town Hall, located in the council chambers lobby. This space operates from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. and will remain open nightly for the duration of the cold weather alert.

Additional day and overnight support is available through the Christian Faith Outreach Centre’s Doors of Compassion at the Ajax Hub on Commercial Avenue. This location is pet-friendly and open to adults.

Local officials remind residents that Ajax Pickering warming centres are available to ensure no one is left exposed during dangerous winter conditions.
