Durham Scarborough BRT construction is moving forward this spring as work continues on the long-anticipated 36-kilometre Bus Rapid Transit line connecting Toronto to Oshawa.

The first phase of the more than $1 billion project is already underway in Ajax, covering the section from just west of Harwood Avenue to Galea Drive. Additional construction is scheduled to begin this spring along Kingston Road in Pickering, subject to procurement timelines and utility coordination.

Planned work includes the construction of dedicated median bus lanes, new transit stop platforms and shelters, upgraded traffic signals with transit priority, dedicated cycle tracks, improved sidewalks, road reconstruction, sewer and watermain upgrades, street lighting, and enhanced landscaping.

The Ajax section from Rotherglen Road to west of Harwood Avenue will include four new median bus stop platforms, while Pickering construction will extend from Steeple Hill to Merritton Road and from Dixie Road to Bainbridge Drive. Additional segments across Pickering and the Ajax border remain in planning stages.

Durham Region officials say the project will create seamless connections between local transit systems along the Highway 2–Ellesmere corridor, supporting long-term growth. More than 43,000 new residents and 26,000 new jobs are expected within walking distance of the corridor in the coming decades.

The Bus Rapid Transit line will eventually provide five-minute service during peak hours and reduce travel times by up to 20 minutes once fully operational by 2030. Temporary lane closures and traffic delays are expected during construction, though access to businesses will be maintained.
