An Oshawa SIU investigation is underway after a police officer shot a man and another officer during a mental health call in the city.
Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) confirmed it is investigating an incident that occurred around 11 a.m. on January 18 at a residence on Cedar Street in Oshawa. Durham Regional Police Service officers were responding to a mental health-related call when they encountered a 27-year-old man armed with a knife.
During the interaction, one officer discharged their firearm multiple times. The man was struck, as was a police officer. Both were taken to hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries and are reported to be in stable condition.
The SIU said there is no indication the man was carrying a firearm at the time of the incident.
Five SIU investigators and two forensic investigators have been assigned to the case. The investigation remains ongoing.
Anyone with information, including video or photos related to the Oshawa SIU investigation, is asked to contact the SIU at 1-800-787-8529.
