A man wanted in connection with two separate second-degree murder investigations in Ontario has been taken into custody after surrendering to police in Peterborough.

Police say Michael Waterman, 44, whose address has been listed in both Oshawa and Peterborough, turned himself in to Peterborough Police on Friday afternoon. Officers with the Emergency Response Unit were alerted that Waterman was in the area and attended a residence near Dalhousie Street and Aylmer Street at approximately 3 p.m.

According to police, officers called out to Waterman, who exited the residence and surrendered without incident. He is being held in custody and is scheduled to appear in Weekend and Statutory Holiday court on Saturday.

Waterman was wanted on a charge of second-degree murder in connection with the December 6 death of a 33-year-old man in Peterborough. In that investigation, police previously arrested Peter Pople, 28, in Belleville, and Kaya Coughlin, 29, in Peterborough, both of whom were charged with second-degree murder.

A warrant was issued for Waterman following those arrests. Five days later, Durham Regional Police also issued a warrant for Waterman’s arrest in relation to the stabbing death of Jeremy Russell, 44, in Oshawa.

Russell was found suffering from multiple stab wounds on Park Road North near John Street after police responded to a 9-1-1 call earlier this week. He was transported to a Toronto-area trauma centre, where he later died. His death marked the ninth homicide in Durham Region in 2025.

In the Oshawa case, Nicholas Robbins, 33, was arrested and charged with second-degree murder and has been held for a bail hearing.

Police have confirmed that Waterman, Robbins, and Russell were all known to one another.
