Five Arrested in $2 Million Amazon Warehouse Fraud and Theft Case in Ajax

Five people have been arrested following a $2 million fraud and theft investigation involving the Amazon Fulfillment Centre in Ajax, according to Durham Regional Police.

The investigation began after Amazon’s Loss Prevention team alerted police to suspected internal theft at the warehouse on Salem Road. Officers with the DRPS Financial Crimes Unit allege that two employees were responsible for stealing approximately $2 million worth of merchandise over a two-year period.

On December 15, police arrested the two employees. The investigation then expanded, leading officers to execute a search warrant at a residence in Scarborough, where three additional suspects were taken into custody. During the search, police seized more than $250,000 in high-end electronics and $50,000 in cash.

The following individuals have been charged:

  • Ashishkumar Savani (31), Scarborough: fraud over $5,000, theft over $5,000, possession of stolen property over $5,000, and trafficking in stolen property

  • Mehul Baldevbhai Patem (36), Newmarket: fraud over $5,000 and theft over $5,000

  • Bansari Savani (28), Scarborough: possession of stolen property for the purpose of trafficking and possession of stolen property

  • Yash Dhameliya (29), Scarborough: possession of stolen property for the purpose of trafficking

  • Janviben Dhameliya (28), Scarborough: possession of stolen property for the purpose of trafficking

All five accused were released on undertakings.

Police are asking anyone with information related to this investigation or similar incidents to contact D/Cst. Bonner of the Financial Crimes Unit at 1-888-579-1520 ext. 5321. Anonymous tips can be provided through Durham Regional Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS) or online. Tipsters may be eligible for a cash reward.
