Durham Regional Police are renewing their appeal to the public for information in the fatal shooting of a security guard at Pickering Casino Resort, offering a $25,000 reward for tips leading to the suspect’s arrest.
The incident occurred on October 9, 2023, at approximately 5:05 a.m., when officers from West Division responded to reports of an armed person at the casino located at 888 Durham Live Avenue. Police arrived to find 34-year-old Michael Ferdinand suffering from gunshot wounds. He was transported to a Toronto-area trauma centre, where he later died from his injuries.
Police confirmed the suspect was 17 years old at the time of the shooting and is now 20 years old. The individual has been identified by investigators and is currently wanted on a Canada-wide warrant for Second Degree Murder. His name and photo have been released by police and are available on the Durham Regional Police Service (DRPS) website.
Durham Regional Crime Stoppers is now offering the $25,000 reward to encourage anyone with information about the suspect’s whereabouts to come forward. Police noted that the suspect has no fixed address, but is believed to have ties to the Driftwood area near Jane Street and Finch Avenue West in Toronto. Investigators also stated the suspect is active on social media and posted a video approximately two months ago.
Both police and the victim’s family issued emotional appeals, emphasizing that someone likely knows where the suspect is and urging them to speak with authorities.
Investigators are also warning that anyone found assisting the suspect in evading police may face criminal charges under the Criminal Code of Canada. The suspect is considered armed and dangerous, and members of the public are strongly advised not to approach him.
Anyone who sees the suspect is urged to call 911 immediately. Those with information about his location or who may have had contact with him since the homicide are asked to contact the DRPS Homicide Unit at 905-579-1520, ext. 5415. Anonymous tips can be provided through Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS). Tipsters may be eligible for the $25,000 cash reward.
Michael Ferdinand continues to be deeply missed by his family and the community. Police stress that even the smallest piece of information could be critical in bringing closure to the case.
