Two teenagers have been arrested in the Whitby cinema robbery investigation, Durham Regional Police announced on October 28. The arrests are a substantial development in the case involving an attack on a 15-year-old at Landmark Cinemas.

Police say a 15-year-old from Oshawa and a 17-year-old from Pickering were arrested without incident on October 28 after investigators identified four suspects and obtained arrest warrants for two.

October 25 attack under investigation

Officers from Central West Division responded to an armed-person call at the theatre, at 75 Consumers Drive, at approximately 12:40 a.m. on October 25. They found a 15-year-old boy with a significant laceration.

Investigators allege the boy went to the theatre to meet a girl he knew through social media. A group of youths approached him and demanded his jacket. When he refused, one suspect allegedly struck his arm with a machete before members of the group assaulted him and took his jacket and cash.

These allegations have not been proven in court. The police update says investigators believe the incident was isolated and that the investigation is continuing.

Charges announced against two youths

The 15-year-old accused is charged with robbery while armed with an offensive weapon, aggravated assault, possession of a weapon dangerous to the public peace, disguise with intent, three counts of failing to comply with a release order, and failing to comply with a youth sentence order.

The 17-year-old accused is charged with robbery while armed with an offensive weapon, aggravated assault, disguise with intent, two counts of failing to comply with a release order, and failing to comply with a youth sentence order.

Police allege both youths were in violation of release and sentence orders when arrested. The release does not announce arrests or charges against the other two identified suspects.

Police appeal for information continues

Anyone with cellphone, dash-camera or surveillance footage, or other information about the Whitby cinema robbery, is asked to contact the Central West Criminal Investigations Bureau at 1-888-579-1520, extension 1805.

CTV News also reported the arrests on October 28. All About Durham’s earlier report covered the initial incident before these arrests were announced.
