Durham October 7 patrols are being increased around places of worship and community gathering areas ahead of Wednesday’s anniversary of the 2023 attacks in Israel.
Durham Regional Police said additional officers will be visible in areas connected with the Jewish community before the anniversary and in the days that follow.
Police call the presence precautionary
The service described the increased presence as proactive and precautionary. Police said they recognize the anniversary may bring heightened concern for some community members.
Officers are continuing to work with community partners, faith organizations and community leaders during the period, according to the police statement reported by Durham Radio News.
Police encouraged residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious, concerning or dangerous activity. Emergencies should be reported through 911. Non-emergency reports can be made through Durham police at 1-888-579-1520 or through the service’s online reporting system when appropriate.
The service said hate, intimidation and discrimination have no place in Durham Region and that incidents motivated by hate or bias will be investigated.
The Durham October 7 patrols are a separate time-specific operation from the additional patrols announced for Jewish high holidays in September.
