Newcastle attempted arson charges have been laid against a 34-year-old Clarington man after Durham police responded to a home south of Highway 401.
Officers were called to the Port of Newcastle Drive and Shipway Avenue area at about 12:35 p.m. on Friday, September 25. Police said they found a man actively damaging the interior and negotiated his surrender.
Gasoline found inside damaged home
A search found more than $100,000 in damage, gasoline-filled containers near a damaged natural-gas fireplace and gasoline in other parts of the home.

The accused faces charges including arson, possessing incendiary material for arson, mischief endangering life and two other mischief counts. The allegations have not been proven in court. He was held for a bail hearing.
