Ajax smoke alarm testing is being encouraged on September 28 as part of Ontario’s annual Saved by the Beep campaign.
Ajax Fire and Emergency Services is asking residents to test every smoke and carbon-monoxide alarm in their home. The department says only working alarms can provide enough warning to escape a fire.
Ajax Fire recommends monthly tests
Residents should test alarms monthly, replace batteries yearly or when a warning chirps, and replace smoke alarms that are 10 years old. Carbon-monoxide alarms should be replaced according to manufacturer guidance, typically after five to seven years.
Ajax Fire says alarms should be installed outside sleeping areas and on every level. Since January 2026, Ontario has required carbon-monoxide alarms on every level of homes with fuel-burning appliances, fireplaces or attached garages.
Owners and landlords are responsible for installing and maintaining alarms. Tenants should test alarms and report problems. If an alarm sounds, leave immediately and call 911.
