Courtice Furnace Rebate Ad Led to 20-Year Loan

A Courtice furnace rebate offer promoted through a Facebook advertisement led a local homeowner into a 20-year financing agreement, according to reports published by Money.ca and CTV News.

Money.ca reported on September 13 that Courtice resident Colleen Carter clicked the advertisement in April while looking to reduce the cost of replacing her furnace. A salesperson contacted her and said she qualified for $1,650.

The payment was not a government rebate. According to the report, Brampton-based HVAC contractor JP Home Comfort provided a $1,900 cheque, including a $250 neighbour-referral bonus. The furnace purchase was financed separately through Financeit.

CTV News first reported the case on August 14. The reporting said the financing agreement would have required approximately $12,000 in payments over 20 years. After CTV contacted the contractor and lender, Carter was released from the long-term agreement and permitted to purchase the furnace outright for $4,700.

Company and lender responses

Money.ca said Financeit described its service as flexible purchase financing offered through contractors. The lender said customers can pay a loan in full without a fee, but it does not set the contractor’s equipment price or administer government rebate programs.

The distinction matters because a contractor-funded incentive and a government energy-efficiency benefit are different programs with different terms. Residents should determine who is providing any promised payment, whether a loan is involved and what the total repayment will be before signing.

The reports did not say the lender presented the payment as a government rebate. They described the financing as a third-party agreement connected to the contractor’s sale.

Federal programs have changed

Natural Resources Canada says the Canada Greener Homes Grant and Canada Greener Homes Loan are closed. The federal initiative’s current page lists more limited support, including the Canada Greener Homes Affordability Program for eligible low- to median-income households and the Oil to Heat Pump Affordability Program in participating jurisdictions.

That makes it important to verify a Courtice furnace rebate claim against the current federal or provincial program website. A social-media advertisement, telephone pitch or contractor cheque is not proof that an offer is government funded.

Checks before agreeing to HVAC financing

Homeowners can reduce their risk by asking for the cash price and financed price in writing, confirming the interest rate and repayment term, and reviewing the total cost rather than only the monthly payment. They should also identify the lender, ask whether early repayment is permitted and keep copies of every document.

Anyone considering an energy-efficiency incentive should start with the relevant government website and confirm eligibility directly. Consumers can also obtain independent quotes before replacing heating or cooling equipment.

Residents should avoid relying on verbal descriptions of a promotion. The written contract should identify the seller, lender, financed amount, payment schedule and cancellation terms, while the government program’s own page should confirm whether the proposed equipment and household qualify.

The Courtice case was resolved after media inquiries, but it provides a broader reminder for Durham homeowners: rebate language can describe a private sales incentive, while the accompanying paperwork may still be a long-term loan.
