Ajax comic writer faces uncertainty amid U.S. trade war

An Ajax comic writer says Canada’s independent comics industry is facing an uncertain period as creators balance U.S. publishing relationships, convention appearances and major changes to comic-book distribution.

Fred Kennedy, known to Toronto radio listeners as “Fearless Fred,” lives in Ajax and has built a second career writing comics alongside his work as an afternoon radio host.

Kennedy is among several Ontario creators discussing how Canada-U.S. tensions are affecting decisions about where they travel and how they promote their work.

For Kennedy, completely avoiding the American market is difficult because much of his professional comic work is connected to U.S. publishers and events.

U.S. conventions remain important for creators

Kennedy recently attended San Diego Comic-Con and expects to travel to New York for another professional commitment later this year.

He told INsauga that the trips are ultimately part of his job.

Comic conventions provide writers and artists with opportunities to meet readers, publishers and other creators while promoting upcoming projects.

That exposure can be particularly valuable for independent creators, who often depend on conventions and direct interaction with fans to build audiences.

Kennedy has several projects underway, including work connected with Samurai Pizza Cats and further plans involving Dead Romans.

Dead Romans, created with artist Nick Marinkovich, previously brought Kennedy wider recognition as a comic writer.

Comic distribution adds another challenge

Trade tensions are not the only concern facing the industry.

Comic creators and smaller publishers have also been adapting to major disruption involving Diamond Comic Distributors, which had played an important role in getting comics into specialty stores.

The company’s financial restructuring and subsequent changes to its business created uncertainty across parts of the North American comic market.

For smaller creators, distribution matters because producing a comic is only one part of the process. Books still have to reach retailers and readers.

Several Ontario creators interviewed for the original report said that uncertainty continues to influence how they approach new projects and sales.

Other Ontario artists limit U.S. travel

Kennedy is not alone in reconsidering how often he crosses the border.

Some Canadian creators have reduced their appearances at American conventions, while others have chosen not to travel to the United States for the time being.

Those are individual decisions influenced by political concerns, personal circumstances and business needs.

Toronto-based creators continue to participate heavily in Canadian events such as Fan Expo while also looking at opportunities in Europe, Africa and other international markets.

For creators with American publishers or major U.S. audiences, however, completely withdrawing from the market can be difficult.

Trade uncertainty reaches creative industries

The current Canada-U.S. trade dispute has created uncertainty across numerous Canadian industries.

For comic creators, the impact is less straightforward than in industries directly targeted by particular tariffs.

Their concerns include cross-border business relationships, the cost and necessity of travelling to U.S. conventions, access to publishers and the continuing restructuring of comic distribution.

That makes the situation particularly complicated for independent artists and writers who rely on several income sources rather than one large employer.

For Ajax comic writer Fred Kennedy, the approach is to continue pursuing professional opportunities while navigating an increasingly complicated cross-border environment.

His experience also provides a local example of how international economic and political developments can reach creative professionals working from communities such as Ajax, even in an industry that might appear far removed from traditional trade disputes.
