The controversy over the Lake Ontario name has reached Ontario government and utility websites after Hydro One’s outage map briefly displayed the body of water as “Lake America.”

Hydro One acknowledged the incorrect label after users began sharing screenshots of its outage map online.

The electricity utility said the problem originated with a third-party mapping service rather than an intentional decision by Hydro One to rename Lake Ontario.

Hydro One said it was working with its mapping vendor to correct the geographic reference and apologized for the error.

The label subsequently appeared to have been corrected.

Ontario 511 and other maps also affected

Hydro One was not the only Ontario organization whose online mapping service displayed the controversial name.

Ontario 511, the province’s highway and traffic-information service, also briefly showed “Lake America” before the label was corrected.

Reports also identified the alternate name on maps used by other Ontario organizations, including Metrolinx, raising questions about how widely the naming change had spread across digital mapping platforms.

The incidents demonstrate how changes made within major third-party mapping systems can flow through to websites, apps and public information services that rely on those providers for their underlying geographic data. In many cases, organizations may have limited control over individual place names that appear automatically through an external map provider.

There is no indication that Hydro One, Ontario 511 or Metrolinx independently adopted “Lake America” as Canada’s official name for the lake. Instead, the appearances appear to reflect shared mapping data rather than separate naming decisions by the Ontario organizations themselves.

The issue also highlights how a single change within a widely used digital mapping database can quickly become visible across multiple unrelated websites and services before organizations have an opportunity to identify and correct it.

Google Maps changed name for U.S. users

The mapping issue follows U.S. President Donald Trump’s executive order directing American federal agencies to use “Lake America” instead of Lake Ontario.

Google Maps subsequently adopted the U.S. government’s terminology for users located in the United States.

Canadian users are expected to continue seeing “Lake Ontario,” while users in some other countries may see both names.

The U.S. directive does not officially rename Lake Ontario in Canada.

Canadian political and Indigenous leaders have continued to reject the U.S. terminology and emphasize the historic and Indigenous origins of the Lake Ontario name.

Why the issue matters in Durham Region

Lake Ontario forms the southern shoreline of much of Durham Region, including Pickering, Ajax, Whitby, Oshawa and Clarington.

That makes changes to how the lake is identified on commonly used digital maps particularly noticeable for Durham residents who use those platforms for weather, transportation, power-outage and navigation information.

Hydro One’s explanation also clarifies that the appearance of “Lake America” on its outage map should not be interpreted as an official Canadian geographic-name change.

For residents using Hydro One’s outage tools, the lake remains Lake Ontario despite the temporary third-party mapping error.
