Durham Non-Profit Funding is providing a combined $500,000 to 11 local organizations working to reduce poverty, address social inequalities and improve community wellness across the region.

Durham Regional Council approved the investment through the Thriving Communities Fund, which is part of the region’s Community Social Investment Program.

The funding is intended to support operational expenses and capacity-building initiatives that help non-profit organizations strengthen the programs and services they provide to residents.

The selected organizations work in areas ranging from homelessness and food security to disability inclusion, education, youth services and community outreach.

Funding Designed to Strengthen Local Organizations

Durham Region says the investment is intended to help non-profits strengthen their ability to serve residents over the long term.

Rather than being limited to one-time programs, the money may support operational or capacity-building activities.

That could include work needed to improve how organizations deliver services, manage resources and respond to growing community needs.

Durham Region Social Services Commissioner Stella Danos-Papaconstantinou said non-profit organizations support residents at different stages of life and play an important role in building resilient communities.

She said supporting the organizations contributes to a stronger Durham Region.

Back Door Mission Among Funding Recipients

One of the 11 recipients is Back Door Mission, a downtown Oshawa organization that operates as a collaborative social and health-services hub for people experiencing homelessness.

Its inclusion connects the funding announcement to ongoing concerns about homelessness, poverty and access to services across Durham Region.

Back Door Mission works with residents who may need multiple forms of support, including access to social and health services.

Community Living Ajax-Pickering and Whitby Included

Community Living Ajax-Pickering and Whitby is also receiving support.

The organization advocates for people with intellectual disabilities and works toward their full inclusion in the community.

Its services and advocacy cover several Durham municipalities, making it one of the region-wide organizations included in the funding round.

Funding Also Supports Disability Employment

Whitby-based Melly’s Workplace, Market + Café is another recipient.

The not-for-profit café and market supports adults with disabilities through paid employment and community programming.

The organization’s inclusion in the Durham Non-Profit Funding program highlights the fund’s broader focus on inclusion and economic participation, not only emergency or crisis services.

Food Education and Community Gardens Supported

We Grow Food is also among the 11 organizations selected.

The group works with students, families and communities through food education and shared garden spaces.

Its programming connects food access with education and community participation.

Food security remains an important issue for many families, and organizations working in this area can complement food banks and other direct support programs.

Other Organizations Receiving Funding

The full list of 2026 Thriving Communities Fund recipients includes:

  • Back Door Mission
  • Community Living Ajax-Pickering and Whitby
  • Durham Alliance Outreach
  • Melly’s Workplace, Market + Café
  • We Grow Food
  • Ajax Public Library
  • Club Optimiste Francophone de Durham
  • Durham Black Educators’ Network
  • Durham Outlook for the Needy
  • Ignite Durham Learning Foundation
  • Uxbridge Youth Centre

Together, the recipients represent a wide range of communities and service areas across Durham Region.

Funding Addresses Poverty and Social Inequality

The Thriving Communities Fund is designed for organizations whose work aligns with priorities such as reducing poverty, addressing social inequalities and improving wellness.

Those priorities can include access to food, housing supports, education, inclusion, employment opportunities and youth programming.

The $500,000 investment is therefore spread across organizations with different missions but similar community-development goals.

Durham Alliance Outreach Included

Another recipient, Durham Alliance Outreach, focuses on strengthening the 2SLGBTQIA+ community in Durham Region.

Its inclusion demonstrates the fund’s emphasis on social inclusion and addressing barriers faced by different groups within the community.

The organization operates as a registered Canadian charity.

Education and Youth Organizations Receive Support

Several recipients focus specifically on young people and education.

They include the Durham Black Educators’ Network, Ignite Durham Learning Foundation, Ajax Public Library and Uxbridge Youth Centre.

These groups provide different forms of educational, social and community support.

The investment can help them strengthen existing programs or improve their ability to serve more residents.

$500,000 Investment Spread Across 11 Groups

The latest Durham Non-Profit Funding allocation demonstrates the region’s continued use of the Community Social Investment Program to support local organizations.

The program is intended to strengthen community-based services while helping non-profits remain sustainable and responsive.

For residents, the impact of the funding could be seen through stronger homelessness services, more inclusive employment opportunities, food education, youth programs, disability advocacy and other community supports.

The $500,000 investment will be shared among the 11 selected organizations as they continue their work across Durham Region.
