A Durham Road Cleanup involving volunteers in Ajax and Pickering helped remove approximately 181 kilograms of trash from roads, highways and public spaces during a community cleanup initiative held Aug. 9.

The effort was organized by volunteers associated with Dr. Shri Nanasaheb Dharmadhikari Pratishthan, a community-based non-profit organization that operates in Canada, the United States and numerous other countries.

Cleanup activities took place at three locations, including two directly connected to Durham Region.

In Ajax, volunteers cleaned Salem Road between Rossland Road and Taunton Road.

In Pickering, volunteers worked along Highway 7 from Sideline 20 to Brock Road, with support from Ontario’s Ministry of Transportation.

A third cleanup took place at Wismer Park in Markham.

Volunteers Collect 30 Bags of Trash

Organizers said volunteers collected approximately 30 bags of garbage weighing around 181 kilograms across the three cleanup locations.

The volunteers were provided with visibility vests to improve safety while working near active roads and traffic.

According to the supplied report, 21 volunteers participated across the locations.

The cleanup was carried out through local adopt-a-road, adopt-a-highway and adopt-a-park programs administered in Ajax, Pickering and Markham.

The programs give community organizations and volunteers an opportunity to help maintain public spaces while reducing litter along roads, highways and parks.

Ajax Cleanup Focuses on Salem Road

The Ajax portion of the Durham Road Cleanup took place along Salem Road between Rossland Road and Taunton Road.

That stretch of road runs through a busy part of Ajax and experiences regular vehicle traffic.

Volunteers worked along the corridor collecting discarded material and other roadside litter.

The supplied report says 10 volunteers took part in the Ajax and Pickering-related portions combined, while three people specifically worked along the Highway 7 location in Pickering.

Highway 7 Cleanup Takes Place in Pickering

In Pickering, volunteers focused on Highway 7 between Sideline 20 and Brock Road.

The cleanup was supported by Ontario’s Ministry of Transportation and conducted under an adopt-a-highway program.

Because the work took place beside a provincial highway, visibility and traffic safety were particularly important.

Participants wore safety vests while collecting garbage from the roadside.

The initiative gave volunteers an opportunity to improve the appearance of the highway corridor while also preventing litter from remaining in nearby natural areas.

Volunteers Say Community Service Motivates Them

Volunteer Bhushan Kadam said participating in cleanup efforts provides a sense of contributing to the community and protecting the environment.

He described the work as an opportunity to make a practical contribution while encouraging personal responsibility toward public spaces.

The non-profit behind the cleanup is involved in several other community initiatives in addition to litter removal.

According to the article, its activities include tree planting, blood and plasma donation initiatives, health awareness, disaster relief and education-related programs.

Environmental Benefits Extend Beyond Appearance

Roadside cleanup programs can improve the appearance of neighbourhoods and public corridors, but their value also goes beyond aesthetics.

Removing garbage helps prevent litter from entering drainage systems, parks and surrounding natural areas.

It can also reduce the chance of waste being carried farther by wind or stormwater.

Community cleanup programs additionally give residents a direct role in maintaining shared public spaces.

The Ajax and Pickering portions of the initiative demonstrate how volunteer organizations can work alongside municipalities and provincial agencies on environmental projects.

Ajax and Pickering Part of Larger Cleanup Initiative

The Durham Road Cleanup was part of a broader three-community effort that also included Markham.

At Wismer Park in Markham, local councillors Amanda Yeung Collucci and Alan Ho joined volunteers during the cleanup.

Across all three locations, organizers reported about 181 kilograms of collected waste.

For Durham Region, the most locally relevant parts of the initiative were the Salem Road cleanup in Ajax and the Highway 7 cleanup in Pickering.

The Aug. 9 effort adds to other volunteer-led environmental initiatives occurring across Durham Region and shows how relatively small groups of participants can remove a substantial amount of litter from local roads and public spaces.
