A Pickering Motorcycle Crash has claimed the life of a 22-year-old Scarborough man after his motorcycle entered a Highway 401 construction area and struck an electronic sign board early Saturday morning.

Ontario Provincial Police said the fatal collision happened on the westbound lanes of Highway 401 as the motorcycle approached Brock Road in Pickering.

According to police information provided in the report, the collision occurred shortly after 2 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 15.

The 22-year-old rider was pronounced dead following the crash.

His family has been notified.

Motorcycle Entered Highway Construction Area

Police said the motorcycle entered a construction enclosure before colliding with an electronic sign board located within the work zone.

The impact reportedly ejected the rider from the motorcycle.

An Ontario Provincial Police spokesperson said the motorcyclist was reportedly travelling at a high rate of speed before the collision.

The circumstances surrounding exactly how the motorcycle entered the construction area remain part of the investigation.

No other vehicles were reported to have been involved in the fatal collision in the information released.

Because the investigation remains active, conclusions about the exact cause of the Pickering Motorcycle Crash should not be made until police complete their work.

Highway 401 Closed Following Fatal Collision

The crash resulted in significant traffic disruption along Highway 401.

A closure was put in place around Westney Road following the collision, which occurred shortly after 2 a.m.

The closure reportedly remained in place until at least approximately 8:30 a.m. as officers investigated the scene and crews dealt with the aftermath of the crash.

Highway closures following fatal collisions are often necessary to allow investigators to examine the roadway, document evidence and establish the sequence of events.

Motorists travelling through Pickering that morning faced delays while the affected section remained unavailable.

Construction Underway Along Highway 401

The fatal collision happened while significant roadwork and lane restrictions are affecting portions of Highway 401 across Durham Region.

Numerous construction projects have recently resulted in temporary lane closures and changing traffic configurations through Pickering, Ajax, Oshawa and Clarington.

Drivers travelling through construction areas are required to follow posted speed limits, temporary signs and lane markings while allowing additional space for other vehicles and workers.

The presence of barriers, construction equipment and temporary traffic patterns can make additional caution particularly important, especially during nighttime travel.

Police have not indicated in the supplied information whether any aspect of the construction setup contributed to Saturday’s collision.

Police Seek Witnesses

Ontario Provincial Police are asking anyone who may have witnessed the Pickering Motorcycle Crash or has information that could assist investigators to come forward.

Drivers who were travelling westbound on Highway 401 approaching Brock Road around the time of the collision may have information useful to the investigation.

Police are particularly interested in evidence that could help establish the motorcycle’s movements immediately before the crash.

Anyone with relevant information is asked to contact Toronto OPP at 416-235-4981.

Authorities have not publicly identified the deceased motorcyclist in the supplied report.

The investigation remains focused on determining the circumstances that led to the motorcycle entering the construction area and striking the electronic sign.

The death adds another serious collision to recent traffic incidents along Highway 401 in Durham Region and serves as a reminder for motorists to use additional caution when travelling through active or changing construction zones.
