Durham Music Micro-Grants are now available to musicians, venue operators and music-industry professionals looking for financial help to complete projects across Durham Region.
Durham Regional Excellence in Arts, Music & Sound, known as DREAMS, has launched a new micro-grant program offering awards of $500, $1,000 and $1,500.
Applications are open until midnight on Aug. 21, with funding provided by Invest Durham.
The grants are intended to support a wide range of people working within Durham’s music sector, including performers, producers, engineers, artist managers, songwriters, venue operators and other music-related entrepreneurs.
Grants available at three funding levels
DREAMS has structured the program around three different grant amounts depending on the scale and needs of a proposed project.
The $500 level could support an emerging musician who needs help purchasing an instrument, recording equipment or other basic tools required to develop their work.
The $1,000 grants could assist more established artists with touring expenses, merchandise production, marketing or other costs associated with building an audience.
Venue operators could also use funding for promotion, bookings or other activities designed to strengthen local live music.
The largest grants, worth $1,500, are intended for more advanced projects such as professional recording and mastering, music-video production, distribution campaigns or larger promotional initiatives.
Program open beyond performing musicians
The Durham Music Micro-Grants are not limited to bands or solo performers.
DREAMS co-founder Tony Sutherland said the region has a growing network of people working behind the scenes who are equally important to developing Durham’s music industry.
Eligible applicants may include producers, sound engineers, artist managers, songwriters, venue owners and other professionals whose work supports artists and live music.
Applicants must explain what they want to accomplish with the funding and how the project could benefit Durham Region’s broader music-industry infrastructure.
Who can apply?
Applicants must be at least 16 years old.
They must also live in Durham Region or primarily operate their music-related business or professional activities within the region.
That means eligible applicants may come from Oshawa, Whitby, Ajax, Pickering, Clarington, Uxbridge, Scugog or Brock.
Projects must fit within the eligible music and industry categories outlined by DREAMS.
After applications close, a review panel will evaluate submissions and choose recipients.
Organizers expect to select three or four recipients at both the $500 and $1,000 levels, along with approximately two recipients for the $1,500 grants.
Projects must be completed this fall
Successful applicants will have a limited period to put their funding to work.
Projects receiving Durham Music Micro-Grants must be completed between Sept. 5 and Nov. 15.
Applicants therefore need to submit a clear description of what the money will support and demonstrate that the project can realistically be completed during that timeframe.
DREAMS says the goal is to keep the application process straightforward and make smaller amounts of funding accessible to people who may simply need additional financial support to finish a worthwhile project.
DREAMS expands its role in Durham music
The organization originally launched as the Oshawa Music Awards in 2018 before rebranding as Durham Regional Excellence in Arts, Music & Sound.
The new identity reflects a broader focus on strengthening the music industry across Durham Region rather than concentrating only on awards.
Although this round of micro-grants is currently a one-time program supported by Invest Durham, organizers hope similar funding opportunities can be offered in the future.
Applications for the Durham Music Micro-Grants must be submitted before midnight on Aug. 21.
