A Pickering Road Closure is affecting part of Sandy Beach Road as construction crews continue reconstruction work on nearby Montgomery Park Road.
According to the City of Pickering notice, Sandy Beach Road is temporarily closed between the Bay Ridges Kinsmen Park access and Montgomery Park Road.
The work is connected to the reconstruction of Montgomery Park Road, another important route in the area. The closure is expected to remain in effect while construction progresses, with the current project schedule indicating work could continue through the end of the year.
Drivers who regularly travel through the area should prepare for detours and changing traffic conditions.
Montgomery Park Road also closed
Montgomery Park Road is also closed between Sandy Beach Road and Brock Road as part of the reconstruction project.
The City of Pickering has been carrying out major road improvements in this area as part of infrastructure work associated with Sandy Beach Road and Montgomery Park Road.
Official City information says upgrades to these roads are being completed to help manage increased traffic and heavy-equipment activity connected with preparations for the Pickering Nuclear Generating Station refurbishment.
Construction has been divided into phases to manage traffic impacts while allowing road improvements to proceed.
Durham Region Transit Route 101 detouring
The Pickering Road Closure is also affecting public transit.
Durham Region Transit confirms that Route 101 has been placed on a detour because of construction on Montgomery Park Road.
Route 101A clockwise trips are being redirected through Montgomery Park Road, Brock Road, Bayly Street, Sandy Beach Road and Alyssum Street.
Route 101B counter-clockwise trips are travelling through Alyssum Street, Sandy Beach Road, Bayly Street, Brock Road and Montgomery Park Road.
Several regular bus stops are temporarily unavailable.
DRT says stops on Sandy Beach Road between Alyssum Street and Montgomery Park Road are not being served during the detour.
Stops on Montgomery Park Road between Sandy Beach Road and Brock Road are also affected.
A temporary stop is available on Montgomery Park Road east of Brock Road.
Transit riders should check current DRT service alerts before travelling because detours can change as construction advances.
Drivers should expect changing conditions
Road construction can result in temporary lane changes, access restrictions and additional traffic on surrounding streets.
Motorists travelling near Sandy Beach Road, Montgomery Park Road, Brock Road and Bayly Street should allow extra time and follow posted detour signs.
Access requirements may also change during different construction phases.
The City has previously advised that applicable detour signage will be posted around road closures associated with the project.
Work part of larger Pickering infrastructure upgrades
The Sandy Beach Road and Montgomery Park Road work is part of wider transportation improvements occurring in southern Pickering.
The area serves businesses, recreational spaces and major infrastructure, including access routes associated with the Pickering Nuclear Generating Station.
The City notes that Sandy Beach Road also provides access to Bay Ridges Kinsmen Park, Alex Robertson Park and nearby employment areas.
As the Pickering Road Closure continues, residents, commuters and transit users should monitor City of Pickering and Durham Region Transit updates for changes to road access, bus stops and detour routes.
The affected section of Sandy Beach Road is expected to reopen once the associated reconstruction work has progressed sufficiently and the roadway can safely return to regular traffic.
