Oshawa GM contract talks begin Monday, August 10, with staffing levels, job security and future production at Oshawa Assembly expected to be important issues as Unifor opens negotiations with General Motors.

Unifor represents more than 4,600 workers at GM facilities in Ontario, including Oshawa Assembly, CAMI Assembly in Ingersoll, St. Catharines Propulsion and the Woodstock Distribution Centre.

The negotiations come after Ford workers approved a new three-year agreement in July, establishing a pattern that Unifor will now seek to build on during negotiations with GM.

For Oshawa workers, however, the talks arrive after a difficult period that included the elimination of the plant’s third production shift.

Oshawa GM Contract Talks Put Jobs in Focus

GM returned Oshawa Assembly to a two-shift operation after previously operating three shifts.

The automaker attributed the change to forecast demand and the evolving trade environment.

Unifor strongly opposed the reduction and said it had proposed measures that could have preserved Oshawa’s third shift until the 2026 bargaining round.

The loss of the shift affected hundreds of workers and has made employment security an important issue heading into negotiations.

Any commitments involving future staffing, production allocation and plant operations will therefore be closely watched in Oshawa.

Unifor has not yet publicly released a complete list of Oshawa-specific bargaining demands.

Ford Agreement Sets Pattern for GM Negotiations

Unifor traditionally uses pattern bargaining with the Detroit Three automakers.

The union negotiated first with Ford in 2026 before moving to General Motors. Stellantis negotiations are expected to follow.

Ford workers represented by Unifor approved their new collective agreement with 74 per cent support.

The agreement includes general wage increases, cost-of-living protections, pension and benefit improvements, bonuses and employment commitments at Canadian Ford facilities.

Unifor National President Lana Payne has acknowledged that negotiations across Canada’s auto sector are taking place during an unusually challenging period.

Trade uncertainty, tariffs and long-term questions surrounding vehicle-production investment have added pressure to this bargaining round.

GM Investing $343 Million in Oshawa Assembly

Despite the uncertainty surrounding staffing levels, General Motors has announced significant new investment in Oshawa.

The company says it is investing $343 million in the assembly plant to support production of its next generation of gasoline-powered full-size pickup trucks.

GM has described Oshawa Assembly as an important part of its Canadian manufacturing operations.

The plant currently produces Chevrolet Silverado full-size pickups.

Questions remain, however, about the precise production mix that will be assigned to Oshawa when the next generation of trucks enters production.

Reports have raised the possibility that light-duty production could change, but GM has not publicly confirmed that Oshawa will lose that work.

Those possibilities should therefore be treated as speculation unless the company announces a formal product allocation.

Oshawa Assembly Remains Major Durham Employer

Oshawa has a long connection with General Motors, making developments at the assembly plant economically significant for the wider Durham Region.

The facility reopened for vehicle production in late 2021 following a major investment by the automaker.

Since then, hundreds of thousands of Chevrolet Silverado trucks have been produced at the plant.

Changes to staffing can affect not only GM employees but also suppliers, transportation companies, local businesses and families throughout Durham Region.

That makes employment commitments likely to receive particularly close attention during the Oshawa GM contract talks.

Negotiations Begin August 10

Formal negotiations between Unifor and General Motors are scheduled to begin Monday, August 10.

The union will bargain on behalf of workers at GM operations across Ontario while attempting to build on gains achieved in its agreement with Ford.

For Oshawa employees, the outcome could provide greater clarity on wages and benefits as well as the longer-term outlook for staffing and vehicle production at one of Durham Region’s largest industrial workplaces.

No bargaining deadline or tentative settlement has yet been announced.
