Bowmanville Garden Thefts have prompted a police investigation after a large quantity of vegetables was repeatedly stolen from Liberty Allotment Garden between May and July 2026.

Durham Regional Police are searching for a male suspect believed to have entered the community garden on Liberty Street South in Bowmanville several times and removed produce grown by local gardeners.

Repeated thefts reported at community garden

According to Durham Regional Police, the suspect attended Liberty Allotment Garden numerous times over a period of approximately three months and stole a large amount of vegetation.

Members of the garden community have said the incidents occurred repeatedly, with the suspect allegedly climbing over a fence to enter the property.

Posts shared through local social media groups claim the thefts happened at least five times over five weeks. Garden users estimate that approximately 150 heads of garlic and 100 onions were taken.

Those estimates have not been independently confirmed by police, but they indicate that the losses may have been significant for the gardeners involved.

Liberty Allotment Garden is used by residents who grow vegetables for their households, including seniors and people managing limited food budgets. Some gardeners also reportedly donate a portion of their harvest to local food-support programs.

Theft affects months of work

Community gardens require months of preparation, planting, watering and maintenance before vegetables are ready to harvest.

When produce is stolen shortly before it can be collected, gardeners lose not only the value of the food but also the time, effort and money spent growing it.

The reported Bowmanville Garden Thefts have therefore caused concern beyond the estimated replacement value of the vegetables.

Garden members said the stolen produce was intended for families, seniors and, in some cases, people using local food banks. They described the thefts as taking directly from residents who had invested considerable effort in maintaining their plots.

Additional security measures installed

Garden users are now considering stronger security measures to prevent further incidents.

Several new cameras have reportedly been installed around the property to record anyone who enters the garden without permission. Members are also discussing ways to improve fencing and monitor the site more effectively.

The garden community has emphasized that anyone experiencing food insecurity should ask for assistance rather than taking vegetables without permission.

Gardeners said they may be willing to help people in genuine need when possible, but repeated thefts place an unfair burden on those who have worked to grow the produce.

Police ask public for information

Durham Regional Police have published an appeal seeking assistance in identifying the suspect.

Anyone with information, photographs or surveillance footage that may help the investigation should contact police. Residents who live or work near Liberty Street South may also wish to check doorbell or security-camera recordings from the period between May and July.

Police have not provided details about possible charges. Any person identified as a suspect is considered innocent unless proven guilty in court.

The investigation into the Bowmanville Garden Thefts remains active, and no arrest had been announced at the time of publication.

Anyone who recognizes the suspect or has information connected to the thefts is encouraged to contact Durham Regional Police or submit an anonymous tip through Durham Regional Crime Stoppers.
