A Bowmanville Park Hate Crime investigation is underway after racist language, swastikas and other hateful messages were spray painted across children’s playground equipment at Lord Elgin Park.

Durham Regional Police are searching for at least one suspect and are asking residents with video footage or information to contact investigators.

The graffiti was discovered on several sections of the play structure at the Bowmanville neighbourhood park. Police said the vandalism included hate symbols, racial slurs and threatening language.

A local resident, Hamlin Grange, shared details about the discovery after a family visited the park with two young children. The family reportedly did not immediately notice the messages while the children used the swings and monkey bars.

After looking more closely, they realized the girls had been playing directly above offensive graffiti that included racial slurs and the word “kill.”

Families disturbed by playground vandalism

Grange described the incident as more than ordinary vandalism, saying it damaged the sense of safety and belonging families should expect in their own neighbourhood.

The fact that the hateful messages appeared on equipment designed for young children added to the concern surrounding the incident.

Public parks are intended to be welcoming spaces where families can gather, children can play and residents can enjoy their community. Hate symbols and threatening language can make people feel unsafe and targeted, particularly when the messages are displayed in a highly visible public location.

The incident also raised broader concerns about the connection between hateful language shared online and real-world acts of intimidation or vandalism.

Grange said racism, antisemitism, anti-immigrant rhetoric and other forms of intolerance can create an environment in which some people feel encouraged to bring hateful conduct into public spaces.

Police seek witnesses and footage

Durham Regional Police have not released information about when the graffiti was painted or how many people may have been involved.

Investigators are asking anyone who visited the area and noticed suspicious activity to come forward.

Police are particularly interested in cellphone recordings, home surveillance footage or dash-camera video that may have captured people or vehicles near Lord Elgin Park around the time of the incident.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Detective Constable Dearing of the East Division Criminal Investigations Branch at 1-888-579-1520, extension 1605.

Anonymous information can also be provided to Durham Regional Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS. Tipsters may be eligible for a cash reward when their information assists an investigation.

Hate incidents affect the wider community

The Bowmanville Park Hate Crime investigation highlights the impact hateful vandalism can have beyond the physical damage caused to public property.

Messages involving racial slurs, antisemitic symbols or violent language can create fear among residents and make members of targeted communities feel unwelcome.

When such material appears in a children’s playground, it can also force parents to explain disturbing language and symbols to young children who encounter them unexpectedly.

Prompt reporting allows police to document the incident, gather evidence and determine whether charges can be laid.

Residents who discover similar graffiti should avoid touching or removing it before police or municipal staff have had an opportunity to record the scene. Photographs, precise location details and information about when the vandalism was first noticed may help investigators establish a timeline.

Police have not announced any arrests in connection with the Bowmanville Park Hate Crime investigation. The appeal for witnesses and video evidence remains active.
