Ontario Civic Holiday Hours: Open and Closed Aug. 3

Ontario Civic Holiday hours will affect government offices, banks, mail delivery, transit and recreation services across Southern Ontario on Monday, August 3, 2026. The holiday is not a statutory holiday for every employee, so private businesses can choose whether to open, close or operate with reduced hours. Residents should confirm individual store and attraction schedules before travelling.

Across Ontario, most municipal and regional administrative offices will be closed. Banks and Canada Post services will also be unavailable, with no regular mail collection or delivery. Many libraries, community centres and indoor recreation facilities will close, while restaurants, pharmacies, shopping centres and tourist attractions may remain open under modified schedules.

Durham Region Closures and Transit

Municipal offices in Oshawa, Ajax, Pickering, Whitby, Clarington, Uxbridge, Scugog and Brock are expected to be closed. Many libraries and municipal facilities will also be unavailable, although selected pools, splash pads and outdoor amenities will remain open.

Durham Region Transit will operate weekend service. Its customer-service call centre and service counter at 110 Westney Road South in Ajax will be closed, while the On Demand Call Centre will operate from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Oshawa Centre, Pickering Town Centre and other major shopping destinations are expected to open with holiday hours. Several outdoor pools and splash pads, including Camp Samac in Oshawa, Orono Park in Clarington and Ajax Memorial Pool, are also listed as available.

Waste collection arrangements vary by municipality and address. Residents should check their municipal collection calendar rather than assume every Durham route will move by one day.

Mississauga and Brampton

Mississauga City Hall, Peel non-emergency offices, libraries and many community facilities will be closed. Major shopping areas, including Square One, Erin Mills Town Centre and Dixie Outlet Mall, are expected to open. MiWay will follow a Sunday schedule, while GO Transit will use a Saturday schedule.

Brampton City Hall, many Peel services, libraries and the Peel Art Gallery, Museum and Archives will be closed. PAMA officially lists August 3 as a holiday closure. Bramalea City Centre, Shoppers World, parks, restaurants and selected retailers are expected to operate. Brampton Transit and Zum will run on a Sunday or holiday schedule.

Halton and Hamilton

Municipal offices and many regional facilities in Oakville, Burlington, Milton and Halton Hills will be closed. Several malls, parks, conservation areas and outdoor pools are expected to remain available.

Transit schedules differ by municipality. Oakville and Burlington transit services will use Sunday schedules, while Milton Transit will not operate.

Hamilton City Hall, libraries, indoor recreation centres, arenas, civic museums and the Hamilton Farmers’ Market will be closed. City administrative offices will reopen Tuesday, August 4.

HSR buses will operate on a Sunday schedule, with MyRide and Trans-Cab following the same holiday pattern. Some Hamilton outdoor pools will remain open under their regular summer programming.

Toronto and Niagara Region

Toronto observes the date as Simcoe Day. City administrative services, libraries, banks, Canada Post and St. Lawrence Market will be closed. Major malls, tourist attractions, beaches, outdoor pools and many restaurants will remain open.

The TTC will run holiday service, and GO Transit will follow a Saturday schedule. Toronto waste collection is not universally unchanged: some multi-residential collections will move to later days, while public drop-off depots will close.

In Niagara Region, municipal offices, most libraries, arenas and non-emergency regional services will be closed. Major shopping centres, tourist attractions, many wineries, restaurants and selected alcohol retailers are expected to open.

Niagara Region Transit will provide limited service in St. Catharines, Niagara Falls and Welland, with no service on regional routes.

Ontario Civic Holiday Hours May Change

The most important Ontario Civic Holiday hours changes involve government offices, banks, postal service and municipal facilities. Retailers and attractions can set their own schedules, and weather or operational issues may affect pools, beaches and outdoor programs.

Residents should check official municipal, transit and business websites immediately before travelling, particularly when visiting a specific recreation facility, restaurant, retailer or tourist attraction.
