Clarington Highway 401 Crash Closes Eastbound Lanes

A serious collision involving a detached wheel assembly forced a full closure of the eastbound lanes of Highway 401 in Clarington on Monday morning and sent two people to hospital with serious injuries.

The Clarington Highway 401 crash occurred near Mill Street after an eastbound vehicle reportedly lost a wheel assembly. Ontario Provincial Police said the wheel crossed into the westbound lanes and struck a passing vehicle.

Clarington Highway 401 Crash Causes Major Closure

All eastbound Highway 401 lanes were closed at Mill Street while officers investigated the collision. The left lanes on the westbound side were also blocked, creating significant congestion for commuters and commercial traffic moving through eastern Durham Region.

The closure affected traffic near Newcastle and the eastern section of Clarington. Drivers approaching the area were advised to avoid Highway 401 where possible, allow additional travel time and use alternate routes.

Police did not immediately provide details about the type of vehicle that lost the wheel, why the wheel assembly detached or whether charges were being considered. Those questions are expected to form part of the ongoing investigation.

Investigators were also working to determine the exact sequence of events, including where the wheel separated from the eastbound vehicle and how it entered the westbound lanes. Evidence from the involved vehicles, the roadway and any available camera footage may help officers reconstruct the collision.

Motorists who witnessed the incident or recorded the area on a dashboard camera should preserve the original video. Footage showing the eastbound vehicle before the wheel separated, the wheel crossing the highway or the westbound impact could be important to investigators.

Drivers Urged to Watch for Vehicle Problems

A detached wheel can travel at high speed and create a severe hazard for drivers travelling in either direction. Motorists who notice unusual vibration, pulling, wobbling or noise from a wheel should reduce speed safely and arrange for the vehicle to be inspected.

Drivers should never stop in an active highway lane unless a vehicle cannot be moved. When possible, they should pull onto the shoulder, activate their hazard lights and remain in a safe location away from traffic while contacting emergency or roadside assistance.

The Clarington Highway 401 crash caused major disruption along one of Durham Region’s busiest transportation corridors. Traffic delays may also have affected nearby local roads as vehicles diverted around the closure.

At the time of the morning police update, no estimated reopening time had been announced. Highway conditions can change rapidly as collision investigators finish their work and damaged vehicles are removed.

Ontario 511 provides live information about incidents, closures, traffic cameras and road conditions. Drivers should check the service immediately before travelling through Clarington.

Police had not announced the cause of the wheel separation, and no charges were reported in the initial information. The investigation remains ongoing.

This report should be updated when police release more information about the injured occupants, the vehicle that lost the wheel, possible charges or the reopening of all Highway 401 lanes.
