The Town of Whitby is reassuring residents and visitors that waterfront parking remains free, despite misinformation circulating online suggesting that payment or resident registration is now required.
In a public information update released on June 26, the Town clarified that no paid parking system is currently in place at the waterfront and that both residents and visitors can continue parking as they always have.
The clarification comes after online posts and search engine summaries created confusion about a future paid visitor parking program approved by Whitby Council earlier this year.
According to the Town, while Council has approved a paid visitor parking program in principle, staff are still finalizing the details. The program is now expected to launch in 2027, not this year as originally discussed.
Until that time, there are no parking fees, and no resident registration is required to use Whitby’s waterfront parking areas.
Municipal officials say the Town will provide advance notice well before any changes take effect so residents and visitors understand how the future parking system will operate.
The Town also explained that much of the confusion has been caused by search engines and AI-generated summaries, which sometimes combine information from council reports, public discussions, or older online content without distinguishing between approved future plans and programs that have already been implemented.
Officials emphasized that municipal decisions often move through several stages, including council approval, planning, and implementation. Although the paid visitor parking program has been approved by Council, it has not yet reached the implementation stage.
For now, visitors can continue enjoying Whitby’s waterfront without any changes to parking regulations.
The Town encourages residents to rely on official municipal communication channels for accurate updates regarding waterfront parking and other municipal initiatives. Information about the future paid parking program will be shared well before implementation begins.
Residents can subscribe to Town updates through Whitby.ca/Subscribe or visit Whitby.ca/News for the latest municipal information. Those who subscribe before June 30, 2026, will also be automatically entered into a draw for a gift basket valued at $150, subject to the contest rules.
Whitby officials are reminding the community that checking official sources is the best way to stay informed and avoid misinformation about municipal programs and services.
