Ontario residents can enjoy a week of licence-free fishing as the province marks Canada Day with its annual Free Fishing Week.

From June 27 through July 5, 2026, Canadian residents can fish in Ontario waters without purchasing a fishing licence or Outdoors Card. The initiative encourages families, first-time anglers, and experienced fishers to explore the province’s lakes, rivers, and waterways during the Canada Day holiday period.

The Government of Ontario says the annual program is designed to make outdoor recreation more accessible while encouraging people to experience Ontario’s world-class fishing opportunities.

“Whether you’re a lifelong angler or casting a line for the very first time, our government is making it easier and more convenient to enjoy all that Ontario’s world-class fishing has to offer,” said Mike Harris, Ontario’s Minister of Natural Resources.

The free fishing period is expected to attract thousands of residents to popular fishing destinations throughout Ontario, including numerous locations across Durham Region such as Lake Ontario, Lake Scugog, the Ganaraska River, Lynde Creek, Oshawa Creek, and other local waterways.

Although a fishing licence is not required during the promotional period, anglers must continue to follow all existing provincial fishing regulations. Catch limits, size restrictions, seasonal closures, and species-specific rules remain fully in effect.

The free fishing opportunity is available only to Canadian residents. Anyone participating must carry valid government-issued identification showing their name and date of birth if requested by conservation officers.

Ontario regularly offers licence-free fishing periods throughout the year to encourage more people to experience the province’s outdoor recreational opportunities. These events help introduce new anglers to the sport while supporting local tourism and outdoor businesses.

Officials encourage participants to fish responsibly by respecting conservation rules, properly disposing of waste, and helping protect Ontario’s natural waterways for future generations.

Families looking for an affordable outdoor activity over the Canada Day holiday can take advantage of the program while exploring local conservation areas, parks, and waterfront destinations throughout Durham Region and across Ontario.

The Free Fishing Week continues until July 5, providing residents with nine days to enjoy Ontario’s lakes and rivers without the usual licensing requirements while celebrating Canada’s national holiday.
