Durham Region residents are being reminded that waste collection schedules will change during the week of Canada Day as municipal services adjust for the July 1 holiday.
Regional officials have announced that regular curbside collection services will shift by one day throughout the week, affecting thousands of households across Durham Region. Residents are encouraged to review their updated collection schedules to avoid missed pickups.
The schedule adjustment applies to waste collection services managed by the Region of Durham in Ajax, Brock, Clarington, Pickering, Scugog, and Uxbridge. Residents living in these municipalities should place waste materials at the curb according to the revised collection calendar for the holiday week.
Under the temporary schedule, any waste collection normally scheduled for Wednesday, July 1, will instead occur on Thursday, July 2. The one-day delay will continue throughout the remainder of the week. Collections originally scheduled for Thursday, July 2, will move to Friday, July 3, while Friday collections will take place on Saturday, July 4.
Regional officials say the schedule changes are necessary due to the Canada Day statutory holiday and are part of the annual holiday collection program designed to maintain service throughout the week.
While the Region oversees waste collection services in several Durham municipalities, residents of Oshawa and Whitby are reminded that garbage and green bin collection services in those communities are provided directly by their respective municipalities. Residents should continue to follow guidance issued by their local municipal governments regarding collection services.

Officials say the app has become an increasingly valuable resource for residents, particularly during holiday periods when regular collection schedules are adjusted. Residents can also access collection information through the online calendar available on the Durham Region website.
In addition to collection schedule changes, several Regional Waste Management Facilities will temporarily close for the Canada Day holiday. Facilities located in Brock, Scugog, and Oshawa, along with the Household Special Waste Depot in Clarington, will be closed on Wednesday, July 1.
All affected facilities are scheduled to resume normal operating hours on Thursday, July 2.
Residents should also be aware that the Durham Region Waste Management Centre located at 4600 Garrard Road in Whitby remains closed for an extended construction project. The facility will remain unavailable until at least August 31 while improvements are completed on-site.
To minimize inconvenience during the closure, Durham Region has expanded online ordering and delivery services for waste-related products. Residents can purchase new Green Bins, kitchen containers, backyard composters, and bag tags online. The Region is also offering free home delivery and exchange services for eligible green bins and kitchen containers.
