The Town of Whitby, in partnership with Whitby FC, is set to host two major community viewing events this June to celebrate the highly anticipated FIFA World Cup. As the tournament captures global attention, residents and visitors throughout the Durham Region are invited to gather at designated local venues to support Team Canada as they compete on the international stage. These outdoor watch parties are designed to bring the community together to experience the thrill of the tournament in a festive, family-friendly atmosphere, fostering a sense of unity and national pride among sports fans of all ages while showcasing Whitby’s vibrant community spirit.
The first scheduled viewing will take place on June 12 at Civic Park, located at 575 Rossland Road East directly beside Whitby Town Hall. Fans are welcome to attend the Canada versus Bosnia and Herzegovina match, which will be broadcast on a giant outdoor inflatable screen from 2 p.m. until 6 p.m. This prime location offers easy access for residents looking to enjoy the game in the open air. Since the event is outdoors, organizers encourage attendees to bring lawn chairs or blankets to ensure they remain comfortable while enjoying the game under the summer sky.
Continuing the month-long celebrations, a second viewing event is planned for June 18 outside the Whitby Soccer Dome at 695 Rossland Road. This gathering will focus on the Canada versus Qatar game, running from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Like the previous event, this collaboration between the Town of Whitby and Whitby FC aims to transform these familiar local spaces into hubs of excitement. With Canada hosting the world, these gatherings provide a unique opportunity for locals to witness history live alongside their neighbors.
Elizabeth Roy, Mayor of the Town of Whitby, shared her enthusiasm for the upcoming initiative. “Excitement for the FIFA World Cup is building across the country, and I’m thrilled that Whitby residents will have the chance to come together and cheer on Team Canada as a community. Whitby has a long and proud sports legacy, and events like these strengthen the sense of connection that makes our town so special. I can’t wait to see these spaces filled with cheering fans as we rally behind our team!”
Chris Reilly, Technical Director of Whitby FC, also highlighted the significance of the occasion for the local sports landscape. “We are witnessing a massive year for the game as Canada hosts the world and Whitby FC marks 60 incredible years. The energy of a World Cup on home soil is unmatched, and there’s no better way to capture that spirit than at the Town of Whitby’s viewing parties. These events truly reflect Whitby’s strong sporting culture and its deep commitment to sport at every level. I can’t wait to see our community come together in full force to roar for Canada as they chase their best performance ever!”
To ensure the safety and enjoyment of all attendees, organizers have outlined several guidelines for the events. The gatherings are free, family-friendly, and open to residents of all ages, though no alcohol is permitted on-site to maintain a wholesome environment suitable for children and families. Due to the potential for limited parking at the event locations, attendees are advised to plan ahead and consider alternative transportation options such as taxis or ride-share services. Additionally, the public is reminded to place waste in its proper place and use designated bins to help keep the venues clean and green.
For those interested in exploring other activities, the Town of Whitby offers a comprehensive listing of additional events scheduled for the spring and summer seasons on the official municipal website. Residents hosting their own private viewing parties are also reminded to help keep the community safe and respectful by following the Town’s noise, traffic, and parking by-laws. This ensures that the excitement of the World Cup is enjoyed responsibly across the entire municipality throughout the tournament, making it a memorable summer for everyone involved.
