Ajax Fire and Emergency Services has launched a comprehensive public safety initiative aimed at reducing preventable incidents across the community. The “Get Real Ajax” campaign began on April 21 and will continue through June 5, 2026, utilizing a multi-platform approach to educate residents about fire risks and prevention strategies.
As part of the initiative, personnel from the department will conduct direct visits to selected households throughout the Town of Ajax. These door-to-door interactions are designed to provide residents with face-to-face opportunities to discuss fire safety realities specific to their neighbourhoods. During these visits, firefighters will distribute literature and offer tailored advice, ensuring that the guidance provided is practical and immediately applicable to the resident’s daily living environment.
Complementing the in-person engagement, the campaign features a direct mail component to reach residents who may not be home during patrols. Specific households will receive a detailed information card in the mail outlining key safety messages and the core objectives of the Get Real Ajax program. This material serves as a vital physical resource for residents to keep in their homes, reinforcing the verbal guidance provided by emergency services teams.
To maximize engagement, the department is leveraging multiple social media platforms to distribute vital safety tips and educational videos. Residents are encouraged to follow the campaign’s progress through the Town’s official social media channels alongside specific accounts managed by Ajax Fire and Emergency Services. These platforms, including X (@ajax_fire), Instagram (@ajax_fireofficial), and Facebook (@Ajax Fire and Emergency Services), will feature dynamic content highlighting common fire-related problems found in local homes.
The primary objective of this intensified educational effort is to significantly mitigate fire-related fatalities, injuries, and property damage across the municipality. By fostering a robust culture of preparedness, the department hopes to empower citizens with the knowledge required to protect their families and properties effectively. Kaitlyn Moss, Public Educator with Ajax Fire and Emergency Services, emphasized the value of these direct interactions. “The Get Real Ajax campaign provides a great chance for our firefighters to connect with residents and address any questions they may have about fire safety and prevention,” said Moss.
Community collaboration remains a central theme of the program, emphasizing that public safety is a shared responsibility between professional emergency services and the citizens they serve. The campaign specifically addresses the “reality” of fires, aiming to move residents beyond theoretical knowledge to discuss actual, prevalent risks present in modern Durham Region households. This proactive approach aligns with broader regional goals to enhance emergency response outcomes through preventative measures.
The “Get Real” branding is intended to cut through the noise of typical public awareness campaigns by presenting hard facts and realistic scenarios regarding how quickly a fire can escalate. This includes discussions on escape planning, the maintenance of smoke alarms, and the dangers of complacency. By focusing on these critical elements, Ajax Fire aims to ensure that every resident understands the gravity of fire risks and feels equipped to take decisive action.
With the campaign set to run for several more weeks, officials are encouraging all residents to take the initiative to review their home safety plans. Ajax Fire and Emergency Services remains committed to sustaining these community relationships well beyond the June 5 conclusion of the current initiative, viewing this spring campaign as a foundational step toward a safer year for the entire town.
