As warmer weather arrives across Durham Region construction zones are becoming more frequent on roads and highways. The Region of Durham is reminding all drivers to slow down and proceed with caution through work zones to protect the safety of construction workers, fellow drivers, pedestrians and cyclists.

Road construction work is essential to maintaining and improving the region’s transportation infrastructure. However, these work zones present unique hazards that require extra attention from everyone on the road. Reduced speed limits, lane closures, uneven surfaces and the presence of heavy equipment and workers all create conditions that demand careful driving.

The Region of Durham emphasizes that speed limits are reduced in construction zones and fines are doubled when workers are present. These enhanced penalties reflect the serious danger that speeding poses to vulnerable workers who are performing their duties just metres away from moving traffic.

Construction zone safety is a shared responsibility. Drivers approaching work zones should reduce their speed well before entering the construction area, maintain a safe following distance from other vehicles, stay alert for sudden stops or lane shifts, and obey all posted signs and flag persons. Distractions such as mobile phones should be avoided entirely, particularly in and around construction areas.

The region also reminds drivers that construction activity can change daily. Lane configurations may shift, new detours may be implemented and different portions of roadways may be closed or restricted at various times throughout a project. Staying informed about current construction activity can help drivers plan safer and more efficient routes.

To help residents navigate the construction season, the Region of Durham provides several online resources. Current and upcoming construction projects on Regional roads can be found at durham.ca/WorksProjects. Drivers can also plan their routes in advance using the Traffic Watch Map available at durham.ca/TrafficWatch, which provides real-time information about road conditions and construction activity across the region.

The region’s commitment to road safety extends beyond construction zones through its Vision Zero initiative. Vision Zero is a comprehensive approach to eliminating traffic-related fatalities and serious injuries on Durham roads. More information about how the region is working to make roads safer for everyone is available at durham.ca/VisionZero.

With numerous construction projects expected throughout the spring, summer and fall months, drivers are encouraged to build extra travel time into their schedules and remain patient when encountering work zones. The temporary inconvenience of construction zones contributes to long-term improvements in road quality and safety for all Durham Region residents.

The Region of Durham urges everyone to make safety their top priority when travelling through construction areas this season. Remember that construction workers have families waiting for them to come home safely, and every driver has the power to help make that happen.
