Gardening enthusiasts across the Durham Region can officially start their spring planting preparations as the highly anticipated free compost giveaway returns this weekend. Starting Saturday, April 25, 2026, the Region of Durham, in collaboration with local municipalities, will host a series of self-serve events to thank residents for their continued participation in the green bin and leaf and yard waste collection programs. The initiative aims to close the loop on local waste management by returning nutrient-rich compost—processed from the region’s own collected organic material—back into the community’s gardens and lawns.

The program kicks off tomorrow at two primary locations: the Ajax Operations Centre and the Lakeview Park parking lot in Oshawa. These events run from 8:00 a.m. to noon, rain or shine. Because these are strictly self-serve events, the region is reminding participants that they must bring their own shovels and reusable containers. To ensure that as many residents as possible can benefit from the free compost giveaway, quantities are limited to a maximum of four containers per vehicle on a first-come, first-served basis. This allows for a fair distribution of the material across the growing population of the region.

The events are spread across five Saturdays throughout April and May to provide convenient access for all eight Durham municipalities. After the initial kickoff in Ajax and Oshawa, the program moves to Whitby and Cannington on May 2, followed by a stop in Bowmanville on May 9. Following a brief break, the final stops will be in Pickering and Port Perry on May 23, and Uxbridge on May 30. All events follow the same 8:00 a.m. to noon schedule, and the region warns that residents should arrive early as supplies often run out before the noon cutoff.

It is important to note that unlike previous years, Green Bins and backyard composters will not be available for sale or exchange at these physical event sites. Residents who need to replace a broken bin or purchase new kitchen containers must now do so through the Region of Durham’s official website, which currently offers free home delivery for these items. This change is intended to streamline the free compost giveaway pickup process and reduce vehicle congestion at the municipal operations centers.

The free compost giveaway remains one of the region’s most popular environmental initiatives, rewarding citizens for their efforts in diverting waste from landfills. By utilizing this high-quality compost, local gardeners help improve soil structure and water retention in their private gardens, further contributing to the region’s overall environmental sustainability goals for 2026. Participants are encouraged to wear appropriate footwear and gloves, as the material can be damp and heavy, especially if it rains during the event hours.
